The Mysterious
Balloon
Khel Khel Mein Vigyan
Dr Tonisha Guin
Vishal, Bheem, and Sagar were the best of
friends. One day Vishal came up with a
wonderful idea of throwing a surprise birthday
party for Sagar as his birthday was just two days
later.
He jumped with excitement, and thought,
"Let's throw a surprise birthday party for Sagar!
I’ll invite Bheem as well! Sagar will be very
happy to see him."
Vishal took up his mother’s phone and called
Bheem sharing the idea of a surprise birthday
party for Sagar. Bheem, always ready to help,
agreed with Vishal’s idea and said, "That sounds
awesome! Let's get everything ready!"
The Mysterious Balloon
The next day, Vishal and Bheem went to the
market with Bheem’s mother. They picked out
balloons for decorations, a big jar of cookies,
and a special mug with Sagar’s name on it as a
birthday gift for him.
Just as they were about to leave, Vishal gasped.
"Oh no! We forgot the cake!"
Bheem laughed. "Don’t worry. A new cake shop
has recently opened here."
As they walked, Vishal asked, "How big should
the cake be?"
Bheem thought for a moment and said, “For
the three of us, a 1-kg cake should be enough.”
Vishal’s eyes widened. “How many pieces will
we get from a 1 kg cake?"
Bheem smiled. “Well, it depends on how we cut
it.
Here’s an easy way to do it. First, cut it in half,
then cut each half into two parts, then cut each
of those parts into three equal slices. That will
give us 12 slices.”
Vishal was thrilled. “Perfect! Let’s go there and
order it!” They ordered a chocolate cake with
Sagar’s name written on it.
The day of the party arrived. Vishal was busy
TASK
Can you cut this cake into twelve equal
pieces?
Can you help Vishal and Bheem figure it
how much has been filled so far.
The room was filled with giggles as they tossed
decorating the room with colorful balloons
while Bheem went with his mother to get the
cake from the shop. Vishal picked one balloon
and started blowing air into it. Just then, Sagar
walked in. Vishal froze, trying to hide the
decorations.
"Surprise! No, wait, not yet! Uh… hi, Sagar!"
Vishal paused nervously.
Sagar raised an eyebrow. "What are you doing,
Vishal?"
Vishal quickly covered. "Just, uh, testing how
big the balloons can get!"
Sagar in excitement said, "That’s cool! Let’s try it
together!"
Vishal started blowing air into the balloon, and
Sagar stopped him just in time. "See here, it’s
Sagar held up his balloon, still perfectly inflated.
struggled to fill air in the balloon after having a
getting bigger.”
Vishal nodded. “Yeah! It’s taking up more space
as we blow more air!”
Vishal continued filling the air, and POP! The
balloon burst with a loud bang, making him
jump back.
Sagar laughed. "See? That’s what happens
when you go over the CAPACITY!"
Just then, Bheem walked in, carrying the cake.
"What’s all this noise here? Sagar, you weren’t
supposed to be here yet! It was a surprise for
you!"
Sagar smiled, “I just walked in and saw Vishal
blowing the balloons. Let’s not worry about the
surprise. Let’s enjoy the day.”
Bheem set down the cake and said, "Of course!
But first of all tell me what you both were
doing?
Vishal excitedly said “Sagar and I were blowing
the balloon and testing how big it can become
before bursting!
Bheem eyes widened. They tried different
balloon sizes. Some of them became bigger
and some smaller in sizes before POPPING!
Bheem said, “You know, these balloons remind
me of our school project on water tanks. A
balloon holds air just like a water tank holds
water!”
Sagar smiled and said, “Exactly! The balloon can
only hold a certain amount of air before it pops,
just like a tank can only hold so much water
before it overflows."
Vishal’s eyes lit up. “Oh! That’s what we call
CAPACITY—the maximum amount something
can hold.”
Sagar added, “Right! And the actual amount of
air in the balloon right now—or the water in the
tank—that’s the VOLUME.”
Vishal nodded. “So capacity is the total it can
hold, and volume is how much we have put
inside so far!”
but we have to be careful not to overfill them!"
But first of all tell me what you both were
before it overflows."
Bheem looked at the cake. "And the bigger the
cake, the more the volume—because it takes
up more space! Bigger containers hold more,
but we have to be careful not to overfill them!"
The three friends laughed together, realizing
how much they enjoyed their little adventure.
They quickly decorated the room, took the cake
out from the box, and set the balloons around.
It was time to cut the cake. Sagar carefully cut
the cake, and soon they were all enjoying a
slice.
Vishal suddenly had a mischievous look on his
face. "Hey, Sagar, I bet I can blow up my balloon
bigger than yours!"
Sagar smirked. "Oh, you’re on! But remember,
it’s all about how much air it can hold!"
Bheem chimed in, “I will join too.”
They again started blowing up the balloons,
laughing all the way. Vishal’s balloon grew
rounder and rounder—until POP! It burst, and
everyone burst into laughter.
Sagar held up his balloon, still perfectly inflated.
"Looks like I won this round!" while Bheem
struggled to fill air in the balloon after having a
lot of cake.
Vishal continued filling the air, and POP! The
